Toile de Jouy Textile & Wallpaper

From Indian textiles to french manufactures of printed fabrics : the ever-renewed toile de Jouy

Entered into the collective memory for its scenes depicted in monochrome, the toile de Jouy gives its name to a set of prints on cotton which are in reality only a small part of the production of a factory whose history dates back to the 18th century.

The Oberkampf factory in Jouy-en-Josas was born from the European taste for Indiennes, printed cotton fabrics imported from the Orient in the 17th century. Located near Versailles, benefiting from the water of the Bièvre and the know-how of its creator, Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf, raised in a family of dyers and manufacturer of Indiennes in Switzerland, the factory will quickly grow. Oberkampf will apply various technical innovations to the manufacturing process of printed fabrics, thus moving from the wooden board to the copper plate then to the copper cylinder allowing production to be accelerated.

The richness of the motifs, where gallant, pastoral scenes, flowers and animals stand nearby paisley motifs and historical scenes such as the American War of Independence or even architectural elements borrowed from Antiquity, make the reputation of this house which has entered into posterity.

We perpetuate this long tradition by creating our own patterns such as for Anima, a toile de jouy, an animal bestiary in the spirit of excellence of the Royal Manufacture of Jouy-en-Josas and by manufacturing all our products in our workshops settled in Lyon.
