Inspiration
Since 2023, we have been reworking and publishing period documents in addition to our own creations. The first model in a long series, we are very pleased to present a rare children's chinoiserie from the early 20th century, precisely dated 1910-1920 and coming from the ESSEF (Société Française de Papier Peint) factory founded in 1866 by Jules Roger.
The scene depicted here is quite rare and unusual, showing children playing outdoors surrounded by flowers and shrubs instead of the traditional dragons, monkeys, and other landscapes adorned with bridges. The drawing also reveals a curious detail: a cornucopia filled with cut flowers, symbols in Japan of detachment from the earthly world. Flowers separated from the earth symbolically represent the separation from material life in order to attain spiritual freedom.
A whole symbolism represented through a happy and joyful scene!
