Inspiration
Luminous, richly deep, the vibrant colors of this gouache and its ambiguous subject (poppies, bearers of dreams and peace, are also a powerful opiate) evoked for us the image of Virginia de Castiglione, an emblematic figure of the time of Napoleon III and a contemporary of this archive.
The Countess impressed us with her elegance, her sense of staging, her enigmatic character and her singularity, making her an exceptional figure.
Our search for period documents, in order to enrich our collection, frequently leads us to auction houses, where a trained eye sometimes allows us to unearth forgotten treasures and embody figures from the past.
This is how we acquired this remarkable gouache from the Jules Desfossé factory, probably created under the direction of the talented flower painter Édouard Muller around 1857-1858. It brilliantly testifies to the ambitious projects undertaken by the factory during this period, both in the extreme finesse of the drawing and in the intensity and vibrancy of the colors. The poppy motif, repeated over a considerable height, lends the composition a highly decorative quality.
This work fits perfectly within the aesthetics of the Second Empire, marked by a pronounced taste for compositions rich in detail and for trompe-l'œil.
