Inspiration

We chose among more than ten wallpaper projects created by Maurice Denis (1870-1943), Les Bateaux Roses, a work from 1893, very emblematic of the decorative intentions of the Nabis and their desire to decompartmentalize and democratize the different art forms. We carried out a meticulous restoration, redesigning, looping and relating everything in order to capture its essence, the modern and graphic character of the shapes as well as the delicacy of the colors. Maurice Denis , the member of the Nabis undoubtedly the most imbued with spirituality, deploys in this work on paper a decorative undulation of maritime waves on which stylized boats are dotted. The whole leads to contemplation and testifies to the artist's desire to transfigure reality and translate it into sensations. Influenced by Japonism, using flattened perspectives and colored areas, Denis applies the particular aesthetic inherited from Gauguin to all objects of daily life. It fits into the guidelines of Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts movement in England. This wallpaper project, initially produced for the English factory Sanderson, will not be published as such but in the form of lithographic prints, which when placed end to end constitute sheets like dominoté paper. Denis himself has set up these prints in his house. Today we are happy to continue these first prints.
