Inspiration

Les Canards de Paul Ranson, from an oil on canvas from 1884-1885 “No more easel painting! […] Walls, walls to decorate. […] There are no paintings, there are only decorations! » Jan Verkade, The Torment of God, 1923. Les Canards de Paul Ranson are emblematic of the strong desire, in the last quarter of the 19th century, to open up the different forms of artistic expression and to abolish the boundaries between Fine Arts and Decorative Arts. Very beautiful example of a wallpaper project, undoubtedly intended for a collaboration with Sanderson and Sons, a famous English publisher with a habit of having artistic personalities work for the creation of its wallpapers, this work, without knowing why, will however never be published. Transformed into decorative motifs in the middle of sinuous vine branches, the ducks with their undulating lines truly make the surface of the paper vibrate, creating an animal arabesque combining with the plant. The harmony of flat colors, simple and clever at the same time, mixes with the patterns to create a very beautiful decorative whole.

Ranson's Ducks, after an oil on canvas from 1884-85. Paul Ranson (1864-1909), The Ducks, 1894-1895, oil painting (probably diluted with turpentine) on canvas, H. 65; W. 81.1 cm, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Quimper (acquired at public auction, 1975, from the collection of Michel Ranson, the artist's son, inv. 75-25-1) © Musée des Beaux-Arts de Quimper
