Inspiration

Kyoto, during the tea ceremony or chanoyu, a large silk crepe kimono where the chrysanthemum of a thousand colors is spread, cascading down here in all its splendor. Like an atmosphere of freshly cut grass, an abundant florescence of petals, like an inner hanami... Greek by its original name, Chinese by its first roots, the golden flower is queen or rather empress in Japan since it is emblematic of the imperial family. Flower of winter since the 8th century, it is celebrated each year by the “kiku matsuri” festival. Edible, medicinal, symbol of beauty...it was only introduced to the West at the end of the century by the botanist Linné. In the 19th century, the prosperous period of Japonism in the West after Japan opened up to the world at the start of the Meiji era, it found a more than favorable echo in the decorative arts, particularly through wallpaper. Even today, the history and modernity of Japonism is perpetuated through our wallpaper and textile creations, in the wake of our illustrious predecessors, William Morris and Emile Gallé.
