Violet: A color with multiple meanings

Between Purple and Blue, a color that is warm or cold depending on perception, Violet and its nuances lend themselves to various evocations.

A reference to the violet and its old-fashioned, romantic connotations, violet also evokes mysticism and spirituality, or the political activism of the suffragettes who readily found this shade in their wardrobes. Given its absence in nature and the cost of producing it, violet initially became the color of royalty.

Called subniger or demi-noir in medieval times, violet mixed with white becomes mauve; reddened it is purple; reddened and paled it is rose. Lilac, plum, aubergine, parma violet, garnet, and caput mortuum are also distinguished.
