Inspiration

From among more than a dozen wallpaper designs by Maurice Denis (1870-1943), we selected "Les Bateaux Roses" (The Pink Boats), a work dated 1893, highly emblematic of the Nabis' decorative intentions and their desire to break down barriers and democratize different art forms. We undertook a meticulous restoration, redrawing, reworking, and adjusting the overall pattern to reveal its essence, the modern and graphic character of its forms, and the delicacy of its colors.

Maurice Denis, arguably the most spiritually inclined member of the Nabis, unfolds in this work on paper a decorative undulation of sea waves upon which stylized boats are scattered. The whole invites contemplation and testifies to the artist's desire to transfigure reality and translate it into sensations.

Influenced by Japonisme, and employing flattened perspectives and areas of color, Denis applied the distinctive aesthetic inherited from Gauguin to everyday objects. He aligned himself with the principles of Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts movement in England. This wallpaper design, initially created for the English manufacturer Sanderson, was not produced as a finished piece but rather as lithographic prints, which, when placed end to end, formed sheets like dominoes. Denis himself installed these prints in his home.

Today, we are pleased to build upon those initial impressions.
