Inspiration

We have acquired and patiently restored, in this approach to preserving the heritage that is close to our hearts, a textile archive representing an 18th century Indian light, printed on Nîmes canvas.

Arriving in the West from the 17th century via the sea routes from the port of Marseille, the Indiennes, fabrics from India made with a wooden board, roller, stamp or even by hand, will have a lasting impact on the eye and taste of Westerners.

Dazzled by the fabulous exotic patterns, the shimmering colors and the lightness of these cotton fabrics, Europeans sought to produce their own textiles. The first products were made in Marseille, but Avignon, Aix or Nîmes, from 1678, took over from the Phoenician city and stood out with a great intensity of colors such as sunny yellow here as well as patterns inspired by flora tinged with an oriental influence.

Stopped for a time by the ban on the importation and production of Indiennes in order not to compete with the wool and silk trade, the development of this craft continues to arouse the enthusiasm of the Provençals, particularly seduced by the practicality of these cotton fabrics.

Here is a whole part of the creative journey of cotton fabrics from the Orient which is revealed, adapted and reinterpreted by the Provençal eye.
