Inspiration
Composed of six woodcuts, carved between 1896 and 1897, this set precedes the famous Intimités series. It was with this series that Vallotton achieved the graphic power that would culminate in Intimités.
A clever balance of contrasts, lines becoming more refined, and the growing importance of ornamental motifs in the spirit of Art Nouveau, the Musical Instruments create a subdued atmosphere conducive to music-loving.
