Inspiration

The Ducks by Paul Ranson, after an oil on canvas from 1884-1885

“No more easel paintings! […] Walls, walls to decorate. […] There are no paintings, there are only decorations!” Jan Verkade, The Torment of God, 1923.

Paul Ranson's Ducks are emblematic of the strong desire, in the last quarter of the 19th century, to break down the barriers between different forms of artistic expression and to abolish the boundaries between Fine Arts and Decorative Arts.

A very fine example of a wallpaper design, undoubtedly intended for a collaboration with Sanderson and Sons, a famous English publisher who usually commissioned artistic personalities to create their wallpapers, this work, for reasons unknown, was never published.

Transformed into decorative motifs amidst sinuous vine tendrils, the ducks with their undulating lines truly make the surface of the paper vibrate, creating an animal arabesque that combines with the plant life.

The harmony of the flat colors, simple yet sophisticated, blends with the patterns to create a very beautiful decorative ensemble.
