Inspiration
Composed of six woodcuts, carved between 1896 and 1897, this set precedes the famous Intimités series. It was with this series that Vallotton achieved the graphic power that would culminate in Intimités.
A clever balance of contrasts, lines becoming more refined, and the growing importance of ornamental motifs in the spirit of Art Nouveau, Instruments de musique are directly inspired by the playing and gestures of contemporary musicians observed by Félix Vallotton. Here, the guitarist Louis Schopfer served as inspiration.
This set of prints creates a hushed atmosphere conducive to music.
